Description

Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus is a large snake millipede native to western and northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. Human activities have greatly contributed to the dispersal of this species. Its range continues to expand east and southeast in Europe. It was recently found for the first time in Hungary. It was introduced into North America and now occurs across northern United States and southern Canada.

Adults are ¾ to 13 16 long, and cylindrical, not flattened. The head is large and rounded, not beak-shaped. Simple eyes (ocelli) are present. The face has a short vertical groove (suture) on top that does not extend to the upper lip (labrum).

There are more than 32 body segments (rings), and each ring is covered with a hard, rigid, body wall. The rings are brownish-black with bronze-colored edges. Young specimens have a whorl of hairs (setae) at the back margin of each ring. There is no longitudinal groove on top (dorsal groove), and there are no lateral extensions (paranota) on each ring. The last body segment (telson) does not have a pointed projection.

On males, the legs on the first segment are short and hook-like.

About

Published on Apr 21, 2018

OK, a confession. It was entirely unnecessary to have side-illuminated this film of a (presumed) Julid Millipede Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus (a species with almost as many letters in its scientific name as legs), but having put the torch on the ground whilst preparing to film it struck me that having the shadow as an integral part of the film would make it more interesting. With this mischief in mind I make no apology for showing the fascinating undulating leg-movements of this creature by projection! I don't know much about diplopods so I hope that the identification is correct (over to you, experts!).
