About

An impressive array of landforms and plant communities can be found at Kettle River SNA. Of geological interest is the several hundred million year-old Douglas fault, which runs northeast through the site. A small creek conceals the fault, but two rock formations are exposed on opposite banks of the creek. The fault has placed the 1.1 billion-year-old Chengwatana basalt on a level with the 700 million-year-old Hinckley sandstone.

About

Dec 4, 2020

This SNA is located along the state-designated Wild and Scenic Kettle River, which forms part of the site's western boundary. The maze of backwater channels and the floodplain forest makes foot travel challenging. Whether or not you ever see this SNA in person, it is rewarding to know that we, as Minnesotans, have together protected this important habitat for the rare and wild in Minnesota.
