Sicklepod was formerly classified as Arabis canadensis. In 2003 most New World Arabis species were transferred to the genus Boechera. In 2013, the genus Boechera was split into three genera, and sicklepod was transferred to the genus Borodinia. In a presentation in 2014 it was shown that there are hybrids between Boechera and Borodinia, suggesting that splitting Borodinia from Boechera was invalid. However, returning Borodinia to Boechera would make Boechera polyphyletic and therefore invalid. The controversy has not been resolved. Some authorities, including GRIN and Plants of the World Online, classify sicklepod as Borodinia canadensis. Others, including ITIS, NCBI, Flora of North America, and World Flora Online classify sicklepod as Boechera canadensis. USDA continues to classify sicklepod as Arabis canadensis. Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (AGP IV) does not Angiosperm Phylogeny Group is usually given precedence over other authorities for the taxonomy of North American plants. The current database, APG IV, was published in 2016, and may not reflect the latest thinking. The online database is Version 14, published in July 2017 “and more of less continually updated.” Neither database recognizes the genus Borodinia. MinnesotaSeasons.com will follow APG IV and continue to classify sicklepod as Boechera canadensis. |
