Common Gilled Mushrooms and Allies

(Order Agaricales)

Overview

Agaricales is an order of club fungi (Phylum Basidiomycota). It originally contained all gilled mushrooms and was known by the common name “agarics”. Microscopic studies and DNA research has shown that not all gilled mushrooms are Agaricales and not all Agaricales are gilled mushrooms. The term agarics is still used, but it now encompasses all gilled mushrooms, and it has no taxonomic equivalent.

There are more than 25,000 described species in more than 400 genera in 46 families in the order Agaricales.

Agaricales occur everywhere, on all continents including Antarctica; in every state in the United States and in every province in Canada, and in every county in Minnesota. Every county, that is, except for one – Traverse County. There are no records of an Agaricale in Traverse County from GBIF, iNaturalist, Minnesota Biodiversity Atlas, Mushroom Observer, MycoPortal, or MinnesotaSeasons.com.

Almost all Agaricales are terrestrial (at least one species is aquatic), and they are found in almost every habitat, including grasslands, woodlands, and deserts. Some species are saprobic, getting their nutrients from dead organic matter. Some species are ectomycorrhizal, getting nutrients from the rootlets of plants while helping the plant absorb water and minerals. And some species are parasitic on plants or other fungi.

Description

Fruiting bodies (basidiocarps) of Agaricales typically are fleshy, and they have a cap (pileus), a stalk (stipe), and gills (lamellae). However, none of these characteristics are unique to Agaricales, and some Agaricales lack a well defined cap, stalk, or gills. Based on recent molecular DNA research, puffballs, false truffels, and some of the coral and club fungi, have been moved to the order Agaricales.

Glossary

Ectomycorrhizal

A symbiotic, neutral, or beneficial relationship between a fungus and the tiny rootlets of a plant, usually a tree, where the hyphae surround but do not penetrate the rootlets.

Parasitic

Obtaining nutrients from another living organism.

Saprobic

A term often used for saprotrophic fungi. Referring to fungi that obtain their nutrients from decayed organic matter.
