Description

Rosy Brittlegill is an uncommon, medium-sized to large, gilled mushroom. It occurs in Europe and North America. In the United States it occurs in widely scattered areas east of the Great Plains and on the West Coast. In Europe it is found at the edges of deciduous woodlands. It grows on the ground. It has a mutually beneficial relationship (mycorrhizal) with the tiny rootlets of trees, absorbing sugars and amino acids while helping the tree absorb water.

When it first appears, the cap is convex. The mature cap is red or pink, 2 to 4¾ (5 to 12 cm) in diameter, flat, and often depressed in the middle. The upper surface is dry.

The gills are very brittle, and they are narrowly attached to the stalk, almost free. They are white but they occasionally have a red edge at the rim of the cap.

The stalk is 1½ to 4 (4 to 10 cm) long, to ¾ (1 to 2 cm) wide. It is white, solid, and firm, difficult to squash. It is usually but not always flushed with red.

The flesh is hard. The taste is mild but sometimes bitter. Some mycologists consider it edible, others do not. Eating is not recommended due to the similarity in appearance to many poisonous red-capped brittlegills.

The spore print is pale cream colored.
