Subspecies
There are 25 or 31 recognized subspecies of the northern raccoon (Procyon lotor), depending on who you ask. Of the 31, 22 are found in North America north of Mexico. Only one occurs in Minnesota.

Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

* Average life span in the wild: 2 to 3 years,

* Size: 23.75 to 37.5 in (60 to 95 cm),

* Weight: 4 to 23 lbs (1.8 to 10.4 kg),

Group name: Nursery.

** Raccoons in the northern parts of their range gorge themselves in spring and summer to store up body fat. They then spend much of the winter asleep in a den. There are six other species of raccoons, in addition to the familiar northern (North American) raccoon. Most other species live on tropical islands.

This video was filmed in September 2012 in Austin, Minnesota. A 3year old girl was recently bitten by a raccoon in Austin and the animal tested negative for rabies and distemper.

Just after dusk a large raccoon climbs over edge of the nest but is attacked by Mom. Mom misses the raccoon but slides down at nest edge. Raccoon are a threat and a danger to eaglets even larger than these two are.
