Overview
Gyponana is a genus of typical leafhoppers found throughout North and South America. There are at least 90 Gyponana species in four subgenera worldwide, about 50 species in North America north of Mexico, and at least 7 species in Minnesota.
Three of the subgenera of Gyponana contain just a single species. The remainder are in the nominate subgenus Gyponana. Within the subgenus there are at least 23 species in North America north of Mexico and at least 7 species in Minnesota.
Most Gyponana feed on broad-leaved plants. Two species feed on conifers and at least three feed on deciduous shrubs.
Description
The genus Gyponana includes leafhoppers with a “long, narrow appendix” and nearly pointed forewings (hemelytra). All but a few Gyponana leafhoppers are similar in appearance difficult or impossible to identify based on external characters.
Gyponana subgenus Gyponana adults are ¼″ to 7⁄16″ (7 to 11 mm) long. Most are pale green. On most, the head is distinctly narrower than the exoskeletal plate covering the thorax (pronotum). All have smooth-textured wings (hemelytra).
