Description |
||
Pasture grass-veneer is a small moth but a medium-sized grass veneer. It occurs in the United States east of the Great Plains and in adjacent Canadian provinces. Adults are found from May to September in meadows, old fields, and grassy woodlands. Larvae feed on various grasses. Adults are narrow-bodied. They are 9⁄16″ (14 mm) in length and have a wingspan of ⅞″ (22 mm). The forewings are shiny brown to brownish-orange. There is a long, broad, white or silvery streak along most of the length of the wing, terminating in the postmedial area. It is widest beyond the middle and tapers to both ends. It is divided for most of its length by a prominent yellow streak. Thin silver streaks with black edges extend from the stripe to the inner margin, and near the inner margin from the base to the subterminal line. Beyond the stripe there is a separate white patch in the subterminal area. The terminal line is black, thin, and complete near the leading edge (costal margin) but breaks into a series of dots continuing to the inner margin. The hind wings are pale brownish-yellow and are unmarked. The antennae are long and thread-like. They are held straight back over the body when at rest. The finger-like sensory organs (palps) attached to the mouth are long and densely hairy. They are projected forward, appearing like a fuzzy snout. |
