Overview

Chrysopa is a relative large genus of typical green lacewings (subfamily Chrysopinae) known as stink lacewings. There are at least 75 species of Chrysopa worldwide, 10 species in North America north of Mexico, and at least 4 species in Minnesota.

Larvae, called aphid lions, feed on spider mites, aphids, plant bug nymphs, thrips, leafhoppers, and other soft-bodied insects. Adults feed on pollen, flower nectar, and aphid honeydew.

Green lacewing eggs are sold commercially as a natural control of aphids.

Description

Adults are soft-bodied and ½ to ¾ (10 to 20 mm) long. They are pale green to pale yellowish-green. The compound eyes are hemispherical and golden or copper colored. The antennae are hair-like and two-thirds as long as the body. The four wings are at least 25% longer than the body. They are clear with many green veins. Third stage (instar) larvae are alligator-like in appearance, ¼ to 5 16 long, and have long, sickle-shaped mandibles. They have well-developed legs which allow them to move quickly.
