Some sources recognize two subspecies of common juniper, common juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. communis), with four varieties, and alpine juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. alpina), with three varieties. WSith this treatment. the plant on this page is a variety of ssp. communis. Almost all sources now recognize no subspecies but all seven varieties. Either way, the correct scientific name for the plant on this page is Juniperus communis var. depressa.
