Habitat

Deciduous woodlands and open areas near woodlands, woodland edges, fields, roadsides, yards, pine barrens, wooded swamps, and parks.

Identification

 


Larval Food

Northern spicebush (Lindera benzoin), sassafras (Sassafras albidum), pondspice (Litsea aestivalis) bay (Persea); perhaps northern prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana), and camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora). Of these, only prickly ash is found in Minnesota.

 
Adult Food

Nectar from Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), spotted touch-me-not (Impatiens capensis), thistle (Cirsium), milkweed (Asclepias), azalea (Rhododendron), dogbane (Apocynum), lantana (Lantana), sensitive plant (Mimosa), and sweet pepperbush (Clethra).
