Cassidina is the tribe of beetles that contains most but not all of the species of tortoise beetles. It is a large tribe, with more than 1,700 species worldwide and 35 species in North America north of Mexico. There are at least 6 species found in Minnesota.

Golden tortoise beetle larva carrying a shield made of fecal matter, feeding on a leaf of bindweed. Observe its rear end adding a drop of fluid to the shield.

The poop bug metamorphoses into a beautiful little beetle, the tortoise golden beetle.
