Comments

The road on the east side is a “two-rut” road and may be the best place to park.

Waterproof footwear is recommended.

Amphibians

Great Plains toad (Bufo cognatus), northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens), and wood frog (Rana sylvatica) have been found here.


Birds

Four birds with protected status in Minnesota have been seen here:

Endangered – Henslow’s Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii)

Special Concern – Greater Prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa), Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow (Ammodramus nelsoni),

Other birds seen here include Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus), Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens), Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus), Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis), Le Conte’s Sparrow (Ammodramus leconteii), Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis), Sedge Wren (Cistothorus platensis), Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda), and Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta).


Insects and Arachnids

One insect species with protected status in Minnesota is found here:

Special Concern – Powesheik skipperling (Oarisma powesheik)

Other insects seen here include black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), monarch (Danaus plexippus), orange sulphur (Colias eurytheme), red admiral (Vanessa atalanta), and common wood nymph (Cercyonis pegala).


Mammals

Masked shrew (Sorex cinereus), meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius), meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), prairie deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis), and white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) have all been seen here.


Plants

Three plants with protected status in Minnesota are found here:

Special Concern – pleated gentian (Gentiana affinis), Rydberg’s sunflower (Helianthus nuttallii ssp. rydbergii), small white lady’s slipper (Cypripedium candidum)

The only known population of Rydberg’s sunflower in Minnesota is found here.
