Minnesota Trees

A tree is a large, woody, perennial plant rising usually on a single erect stem (trunk) reaching a height of at least 15 feet and having a well-defined crown. There are 92 native and 9 naturalized tree species in Minnesota.

Prior to European settlement, 51.2 million acres of what is now Minnesota was forested. Today only about 16.7 million forested acres remain. Tree planting and succession due to fire supression are increasing that number.
